Pastor’s Message/Worship Resources: Pentecost May 31, 2020

Welcome to Church Online: The Day of Pentecost

Alleluia.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in us the fire of your love.

Alleluia.

There is a familiar children’s chorus that goes like this:

Chorus:  I am the church, You are the church
We are the church together
All who follow Jesus, all around the world
Yes, we’re the church together

The church is not a building
The church is not a steeple
The church is not a resting place
The church is a people

Now, more than ever, we need to remind ourselves that ‘the church’ is all about the people and not the building where we gather to worship and sing our praises. Until we are together again, we can take comfort that, because of the Holy Spirit, we can continue to be the church wherever and however the Spirit directs us to spread the Good News of the Gospel.

And so, we wait. We pray. We hope. Our service is online each week, with music, God’s Word, messages of hope, prayers for the people, and blessings to take into your week. At least for now, this is where we are. We hope you will be with us as we await the time when we will be able to gather together for worship and fellowship once again. But for now, keep safe and know that God has sent the Holy Spirit to guide us through all aspects of our lives.

In this post you will find resources for you to use at home – there is a link to an audio file of Pastor Jonny’s message, as well as music, prayers and files in PDF format should you wish to download and/or print. Remember that the internet continues to be a very busy place these days – some files may take extra time to download on your device. It is our deepest hope that these resources will be of assistance to you as you worship our Risen Lord.

And, since it is the Day of Pentecost, you should know that the last verse of “I am the church” goes like this:

At Pentecost some people
received the Holy Spirit
and told the Good News through the world
to all who would hear it.

As we begin our worship: Spirit of Gentleness

” ….and down in the city you called once again, when you blew through your people on the rush of the wind….”

The Day of Pentecost

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.      – Acts 2:1-4

From the Psalms: I will sing praise to my God...

Holy Spirit, Psalm 104

Prayer of the Day:

BeFilledWithTheHolySpirit

Let us pray…

Almighty God, on this day you opened the way of eternal life to every race and nation by the promised gift of your Holy Spirit: Shed abroad this gift throughout the world by the preaching of the Gospel, that it may reach to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

Rejoice with Music: Let Him Reign

When you know deep down inside you there is something you must do,

Let the Holy Spirit make His home in you.

Children's Worship: For the young & the young at heart

Below is a link to a children’s bulletin by Concordia Publishing House with simple word searches and activities for The Day of Pentecost. Also, a link to a Word Maze at the Sermons4Kids website (where, as you might guess, you can also find messages to help explain the weekly Scriptures to kids).  There’s also a YouTube link in this section that explains some of the events of the Pentecost after Jesus’ death.

The Lord’s Prayer: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen

Praise with Music: Holy Spirit

“Holy Spirit You are welcome here. Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere…”

A Blessing for your week:

Spirit of the living God
Fall afresh on me
Spirit of the living God
Fall afresh on me
Melt me mould me
Fill me use me
Spirit of the living God
Fall afresh on me
