Pastor’s Message/Worship Resources: August 23, 2020

Welcome to Church Online

Matthew16-18_OnThisRock
St. Peter Lutheran Church, Stettler

We wait. We pray. We hope. Our service is online each week, with music, God’s Word, messages of hope, prayers for the people, and blessings to take into your week. At least for now, this is where we are. We hope you will be with us as we await the time when we will be able to gather together for worship and fellowship once again. But for now, keep safe and know that our God is constant.

In this post you will find resources for you to use at home – there is a link to an audio file of Pastor Jonny’s message, as well as music, prayers and files in PDF format should you wish to download and/or print. The internet continues to be a very busy place these days – some files may take extra time to download on your device. It is our deepest hope that these resources will be of assistance to you as you worship our Lord and Saviour.

12th Sunday after Pentecost: You are the Christ

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” – Matthew 16:15-16

A Call to Worship...

harvest-038

Almighty God,
to you all hearts are open, all desires known,
and from you no secrets are hidden.
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

From the Psalms: Your love, O LORD, endures forever...

Psalm138-8

Praise with Music: Waiting Here for You

“You’re Lord of all creation and still you know my heart…”

Prayer of the Day:

Let us pray…    O God, with all your faithful followers of every age, we praise you, the rock of our life. Be our strong foundation and form us into the body of your Son, that we may gladly minister to all the world, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Children's Worship: For the young & the young at heart

Below is a link to a children’s bulletin from the Sermons4Kids website based on today’s Gospel lesson. You’ll also find a link where you can listen to a song from a VBS program called Concrete and Cranes that fits with today’s Gospel lesson. The lyrics to the song are included below.

Kid’s Bulletin: Who do you say I am?

I’m Gonna Build On the Rock
Chorus
I’m gonna build on the Rock of Jesus’ Promises
I’m gonna build on the Rock of Jesus’ Promises
I’m gonna stand on what is true
That’s what I’m gonna do
I’m gonna build on the Rock of Jesus’ Promises

He’s always there to help me grow
He teaches me all I should know
Yes Jesus loves me He loves me so
I’m gonna build on the Rock of Jesus’ promises

The Word: Today's Scripture Lessons

In Isaiah the people are advised to look to their spiritual ancestors as the rock from which they were hewn. Jesus declares that the church will be built on the rock of Peter’s bold confession of faith. God’s word of reconciliation and God’s mercy are keys to the church’s mission. Paul urges us to not be conformed to this world but to offer our bodies as a living sacrifice, using our individual gifts to build up the body of Christ. From the table we go forth to offer our spiritual worship through word and deed.

Clicking on the Scripture links will take you to the Revised Common Lectionary at the Vanderbilt Divinity Library where you can read the lessons.

Isaish51-1

Listen to me, my people, and give heed to me, my nation; for a teaching will go out from me, and my justice for a light to the peoples.    Isaiah 51:4

Prayers of the People / Lord's Prayer

Friends in Christ, God invites us to hold the needs of our sisters and brothers as dear to us as our own needs. Loving our neighbors as ourselves, we offer our thanksgivings and our petitions on behalf of the church and the world.

Prayers of the Peoplethis link will take you to the Lutheran Core website where you will find prayers for this week.

The Lord’s Prayer: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen

Hear our prayers that we may love you with our whole being
and willingly share the concerns of our neighbors. Amen.

"Sending" Music: Who You Say I Am

I’m a Child of God, Yes I Am!

A Blessing:

AllThingsPossible-1

God of compassion,
you have opened the way for us
and brought us to yourself.
Pour your love into our hearts,
that, overflowing with joy,
we may freely share the blessings of your realm
and faithfully proclaim the good news of Christ.
Amen

Benediction:

Go in Peace, Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God!
